We have been fielding a lot of questions lately about the “New Formula” Tonica strings so we figured it must be time for another update.

So why change?

It’s been fifteen long years since the folks at Pirastro introduced their very popular line of Tonica strings. During the last decade or so they have pioneered and perfected the use of some cutting edge manufacturing techniques and utilized materials that have changed the way we think about bowed instrument strings. The Evah Pirazzi, Obligato and Passione strings are just a few of the products that have benefitted from these innovations, products that have set the benchmark in the bowed string marketplace for tone and playability. Pirastro decided it was time to apply some of this knowledge to their Tonica line and these “New Formula” strings are the result.

So what’s new?

All the strings except the aluminum wound “E” have been re-engineered resulting in some major improvements in their sound characteristics. Tonicas now have a more lively round sound, more open and direct with increased brilliance and projection. Pirastro has managed to do this without compromising the warmth and balance of the set.  The standard set now comes with a silvery steel “E”. They have replaced the old set’s aluminum wound “D” with a silver wound “D” resulting in a more brilliant overall sound and better projection. They are also offering an alternative set with an aluminum wound “E”.

So what’s available

Pirastro has plans to introduce the viola version in the very near future but right now only the violin “New Formula” strings are available.  Available in  stark, mittel and weich (strong, medium and light) except for the wound aluminum “E” which is only available in medium gauge.. Fractional sizes are avalable in 3/4  thru1/2 size, 1/4 thru1/8 size and 1/16 thru 1/32 size.
